Electricacupuncture or "e-stim" sends mild electrical pulses through the skin to help stimulate injured muscles or manipulate nerves to reduce pain. Although electric stimulation is commonly used in physical therapy to constrict muscles and reduce pain, the inclusion of acupuncture needles allows the stimulation to penetrate deeper than if delivered through a superficial patch on the skin. Use simultaneously with acupuncture, e-stim increases the strength of the treatment with regards to pain management and relief.
Up-Regulation of Cell Metabolism and Tissue Repair
Electro-acupuncture has become increasingly popular over the last 20 years. Although the effects of acupuncture are still not fully understood, research has shown a strong correlation between electro-acupuncture and anti-inflammatory effects, the increase of blood and lymphatic flow, and analgesic effects through the release of opioid endorphins and serotonin. It is suggested that electro-acupuncture may also be linked to the up-regulation of cell metabolism and tissue repair and facilitate neuro-muscular stimulation and re-education.
